 Lana Searle and Jason Gunn were broadcasting live in the AD Focus car park in Dargaville last Friday, for the last showing of the Naked Gunn More FM billboard tour which started in Bluff and ended in Dargaville. There were games for the children and the tour ended with Jason setting his ‘naked billboard’ on fire with the fire brigade extinguishing the remnants. “Those who showed up really enjoyed the event and so did Jason and Lana. It was a good way for them to finish their tour and it was nice to see Lana at work in her home town,” said AD Focus owner Deborah van Leeuwerden.

Interim decision released on rates  by Paul Campbell

A challenge to the legality of rates set by the Kaipara District Council and the Northland Regional Council has resulted in an interim High Court judgement finding that while NRC rates ‘were not set lawfully’ the government’s retrospective Validation Act ‘validated the unlawful rates of the KDC’.

Justice Duffy has made an interim judgement on the judicial review brought by the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association and Bruce and Heather Rogan. She has decided that NRC rates were not set lawfully for the 2011/2012, 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 rating

 A team of 22 Northland Kenpo Karate students recently travelled to the police college gymnasium facility at Porirua to compete in the annual under-18 tournament. “All the students were successful in the medal count, some with multiple successes. Four events were up for grabs — forms, synchronised forms with teams of three or four, self defence and sparring. The group trained in the weekend for a couple of months outside of the normal classes to ensure that they were as good as they could be,” said head instructor Ron Mason. “There was also a demonstration by senior students displaying the potential of weapons of opportunity.”

 The Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club held a working bee with local youth at Piroa Falls recently and sandbagging was carried out to stop erosion of the bank where the picnic table is. “It is a popular place for both locals and tourists and it is important to our community that the area is looked after. The rotary club make sure the tracks are good and there are picnic places available,” said club president Tim McGill. “We often have Saturday morning working bees there and the youth come and help us. It is awesome having them involved — they have so much stamina and enthusiasm and get a lot done quickly.”

 Although the weather was intermittent with showers and a few downpours on Sunday, the fourth annual Mangawhai Beach School Ambrose Golf Tournament had more than 100 players on the course, raising funds to support nine teacher assistants in the school. “Everyone was saying what an amazingly fun event for golfers and non-golfers alike. Thanks to our sponsors we had more than $2,500 worth of prizes including 30 spot, longest drive and closest to the pin. We hope to have raised between $5,000 and $6,000. Some teams dressed up in crazy costumes and the Shamrocks won on the day with a gross score of 63,” said principal Aaron Kemp.

Celebrating a century

Changing the guard

Tinopai Primary School has reached a 100-year milestone and to help with formal celebrations on November 26, principal Sonia Kaihe is canvassing for information including anecdotes and photos, at large in the Kaipara community.

Matakohe House with its accommodation and restaurant is under new ownership, with long-running hosts, Lyn and Alex Tetzner “heading off to retirement and to do all the things we haven’t been able to do during our years running the business.”

 Tinopai Primary pupils admire a 100th birthday cake

“If anyone has any information or photos related to Tinopai School’s past years it would be great if they can get in touch with us to help our centenary celebration,” she said. The school recently marked the actual day of the school’s founding, prior to the formal recognition. “We thought we just had to sing ‘happy birthday’ and have a nice cake to celebrate the day,” said Sonia. “Our students read from the book compiled by M D Stirling ‘Te Komiti, Tinopai’ and the cake was shared by the parents that came to help celebrate. Everybody was fascinated to hear that the original Tinopai School

is now the Hakaru Pony Club rooms. The original Tinopai settlement was called Te Komiti, which was a regular stopping point for Maori travellers on the Kaipara. The Komiti Fruitlands Development Association bought 3,000 acres (1,214ha) in 1915 to grow apples and built a wharf in 1917. The school opened to pupils from a wide rural area on September 13 1916. Apple growing finished in the mid1930s with the land returning to traditional farms. Today the population swells three-fold as a popular summer holiday destination. 

AT THE MANGAWHAI MEETING LAST WEEKEND I WAS ASKED THE QUESTION.

Are you too busy to be Mayor? MY RESPONSE WAS:

If I am elected as your Mayor you have my word that I will give the role and the people of the Kaipara district my full commitment to the demands of the job. I desperately want to see Kaipara become the successful, forward looking district which I know we can be. That’s why I am standing.

As mayor I would want to improve the quality of governance, leadership and representation in the Kaipara district. The world is simply changing so fast that elected representatives and senior executives must be up to speed to do their job properly on your behalf.

So if elected I would reduce the number of external governance roles I currently hold. However I would retain some positions that would continue to contribute to my governance experience - one of the key contributions I would make as Mayor. The process of learning never ceases so it’s important to build on that experience and stay up to date.

Any changes to my current roles need to be announced in the right way at the right time. Let me assure you that will be done. Greg Gent Mayoral Candidate Authorised by G.W. Gent, 52 Mitchell Road, Ruawai.

 Lyn Tetzner (left) with new Matahoke House owner, Jaqueline Busca and Alex Tetzner

Museum, in Church Road, Matakohe. “We will continue to offer top line accommodation over the rest of this month,” said Jacqueline. “From October the restaurant will be revamped and up and running, offering a wide range of home cooking.” 

Wrestling superstars return

When it comes to high-flying entertainment, big hits, mean villains and musclebound heroes, the world of pro wrestling has it all. It’s no surprise that this larger-than-life show of physical strength, agility and stamina is so popular — and now New Zealand’s top wrestling league are returning to the Kaipara for a good cause. A hit in 2015, they’re back in time for the school holidays

Members of a Christian youth group called ZEAL worked together to tidy up the streets, car parks and community garden as part of a ‘Loving our Community’ strategy.

this September. Once again it will be possible to get up close ringside and marvel at the daring feats the Maniacs United crew perform in their high-adrenaline matches. Founded in 2011, the roster of this growing league includes some big names and offers a family show which will appeal to old-school fans of TV’s On the Mat as well as followers of the American WWE superstars.

ZEAL is a combined Christian youth group in Dargaville with pastoral oversight from Chris Fulop at Lion of Judah Community Church, Melanie Russell from Riverside Christian Centre and Glenn Henderson from The Lighthouse Church. The group was established 10 weeks ago and aims to provide a safe, drug and alcohol free environment where young people can enjoy some food and engage in a variety of fun activities, including music and games free of charge. “We now have up to 30 young people between 12–17 years of age attending

each week and while I wouldn’t say we particularly ‘push’ the Christianity angle, we do promote a ‘Kingdom Culture’ way of behaviour in the things we do,” said pastor Chris Fulop. “For our young people wanting to explore Christianity a little more deeply, ZEAL ‘X-pand’ provides that opportunity on Wednesday nights from 5.30–7pm at Lion of Judah and a monthly ZEAL worship night called ZEAL ‘explode’ held on a Saturday night at one of the participating churches.” For more information visit the ZEAL Youth — Kauri Coast on Facebook page or contact Chris on 021 717 123. 

Trophy for Aranga  by Ann Morgan

Aranga School pupil, Hunter Holster-Komene, has won this year’s Northern Wairoa Primary School Speech Competition — the first time the school has taken first place since the competition started more than 20 years ago.

 Hunter Holster-Komene, from Aranga School with the Northern Wairoa Primary School Speech Competition trophy

Friend of the school Fran Farrant gave the pupils speech coaching and says Hunter has focus and was able to take everything he was taught onboard. “Being a country school it is challenging to bring the same opportunities that city students have. When Hunter first started training he was very keen to try the competition,” said Mrs Farrant. She says Hunter has a lot of focus for an 11-year-old and he developed his speech, about poverty in New Zealand, very well. “It is a great opportunity for the

children to learn public speaking. It is an important skill to have for their future. “The school is very proud to have walked away on the night with the trophy. It was a real pleasure.” Hunter added, “I have always liked speaking in front of my family and people but it was very nervewracking at the competition. Looking at all the schools on the trophy was very exciting.” The event is organised by the Dargaville Rotary Club and the Northern Wairoa Principal’s association. 

Seminar panelists: Solicitor, Dargaville Medical Centre Dr, Retirement Villages Manager of the Retirement Commissioner’s office, Funeral Director and a Residential Care Facility Manager.

Support groups will be there to detail the support they offer. Brochures and pamphlets will be available. Sponsored by the Dargaville Cancer Support Group and Kaipara Grey Power. Afternoon tea available. Gold coin collection.

New Zealand musician Laughton Kora was at Ruawai College last week mentoring students in songwriting, performance and career options in the music industry as part of the New Zealand Music Commission Schools programme. Laughton has been playing music since he was six-years-old and is known for his incredible voice and immense talent, and has been at the forefront of New Zealand music over the past decade. “I love it up here in the North, the people are lovely,” said Laughton. “It is important for me to go around and tell the students they can be artists and the cool thing is, you can be unique about it. As soon as you express art, you are expressing yourself. Laughton says the programme gives them an allowance to express their individuality. “This is really what it is about. I believe schools have a curriculum but don’t allow for the freedom to get stuff wrong and be experimental. It blows me away that music and theatre is

at the bottom of most schools’ list. “I don’t believe in the school system. It’s not a blanket that suits everybody. How boring would the world be if it was full of professors. The responsiveness and trust the students here at Ruawai College have given me has been huge. They absolutely trust in what they are doing and  Laughton Kora and students from Ruawai College what I am getting out is born artistically but the education of them. “They now have a lot more self belief system has a great way of shutting and they realise they can play music and that down. “They un-educate students out of it’s easy. They want to be here and learn and that requires a lot of intelligence that creativity so I am trying to bring it creatively.” Laughton believes everyone back in.” 

Now, more than any other time in the services’ history, Northland’s Rescue Helicopters need help in the form of public donations, as the annual fundraising appeal launches on Monday. After saving many thousands of lives and completing more than 19,000 flights since 1988, the Northland air ambulance operation continues to be one of the busiest in New Zealand, over some of the country’s most rugged terrain. And with an annual funding shortfall of $1.4m - which is made up of contributions from sponsorships, the Northland Regional Council and public donations - the 2016 fundraising campaign kicks off on Monday, September 19. The twomonth long appeal remains critical to funding the hundreds of life saving flights for Northlanders and visitors to the region every year.

“This service is crucial to Northland and we can all make a difference by donating what we can. The consistent theme we hear from those who have been rescued is that they never thought it would be them in need. This appeal is a great opportunity to help others out in our community.” Already in 2016 Northland’s Rescue Helicopters have completed more than 550 flights, with hundreds more expected before year end. The average cost per call-out is around $6800, while a return flight from Whangarei to Kaitaia alone costs more than $6600.

Court appearances in Dargaville and Whangarei this week, following ‘good old-fashioned police work’, resulted in the arrests of three adults and four youths in relation to a commercial burglary near Whangarei after a vehicle was stolen from Dargaville and used in the offence . The arrests followed the burglary of Gasoline Alley in Maungatapere on September 8.Two 17-year-old males are to appear in the Dargaville District Court on September 22 and one 19-year-old male at the Whangarei District Court on September 19. The four youths have been handed over to Youth Aid. Senior Sergeant Rob Huys says Dargaville police have been ‘relentless’ in investigating a spate of commercial burglaries in the area over recent months, and holding people to account. “A significant amount of time and energy has gone into achieving this result, combined with good old-fashioned police work investigating numerous leads and making smart connections,” he said. “I’m sure that these arrests will make a

Interim decision released on rates Justice Duffy has not yet decided what order to make in respect of an NRC refund of the unlawful rates charged and has asked the council to make further submissions and especially to examine how this ruling might affect the legality of the rates that it has set for its other constituent areas — Whangarei and the Far North. ‘Those rates might also be unlawful’. ‘The errors that I have identified are serious and substantial. In short, the NRC has failed to exercise its statutory powers properly when determining rates resolutions and it has unlawfully sought to delegate the performance of a number of

its functions in relation to rates to KDC. These are substantial and grave errors that warrant recognition by this court making declarations of invalidity’. The interim finding is the latest in a legal saga that has continued since 2012 when over a thousand KDC ratepayers withheld their rates because the council refused to acknowledge that the Mangawhai EcoCare wastewater rates, set to recover a $57 million cost blowout, were unlawful. The government then passed the Validation Act that confirmed the KDC rates. About 10 ratepayers still refuse to pay.

Wellsford’s extreme kayaker Gateway to careers  by Ann Morgan

 by Ann Morgan

Internationally recognised Wellsford kayaker, ten-year-old Gage Forrest Laughton aka ‘Gump’, is joining forces with up and coming singer, songwriter and producer 21-year-old Dion D’Lucia from London.

The Otamatea High School Gateway Programme provides students with work experience and support to help them decide on career options for their future.

 Gage Forrest Laughton aka ‘Gump’ has been paddling since he was seven-years-old

Dion’s music will be in the soundtracks in the Wellsford Primary School students kayaking videos, giving both increased media exposure. Gage’s father Lee has paddled since he was 18-years-old and is a former New Zealand slalom team competitor. “Gage had a few paddles with me when he was seven-years-old and on one occasion we went down Rangitaiki River, which is a grade three river for kayaking. He took to the extreme sport immediately and his passion for paddling grew from there,” said Lee. Lee sent a photo from that day of Gage paddling to an international kayaking magazine and it went viral through the global paddling community. “Michael Burgin from Top Catch in Whangarei heard about Gage and gave him an up-to-date kayak and gear. They

were his first major sponsor and we are so thankful to them. Wettie wetsuits also sponsor him and other countries across the world are closely watching his progress.” The family, including his sister Darcie who also paddles, often travel the 11hour return trip to the Rangitaiki River for extreme training. Lee says that Gage is the youngest person in New Zealand and the second youngest in the world to take on extreme kayaking and people in the USA gave him the nickname ‘Gump’ because of his middle name being Forrest. “We have had invitations to travel overseas for paddling which we aim to do one day. Having Dion’s music in the background of our videos will give both of them exposure.” Follow Gage at Gage Forrest Laughton on facebook. 

“This year we have 63 places available for students in the senior school. The programme is administered by the Tertiary Education Commission and rolled out into schools throughout New Zealand,” said gateway coordinator Fiona Kemp. “We have a pathways class which is careers orientated. Students complete unit standards for career options and they can gain work experience at the same time. “Once they find the employment path they want to pursue we contact businesses  Sunil Tohu is in Year 11 at Otamatea High School’s and is studying forestry in the Gateway programme and ask if they are able to train a student.” they want, other options are pursued. LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS 2016

Call for election action Local Government New Zealand has mounted a campaign to boost voter participation in next month’s local body elections and to raise public awareness of the value of local government and the role it plays. LGNZ president Lawrence Yule aims “to grow citizens’ understanding of the breadth of services delivered each day by local governments across New Zealand, and the impact those services have on their everyday lives. “By making that connection, we hope it inspires Kiwis to take a more proactive stance on the issues they care about in their communities,” said Mr Yule. “Ultimately, how well local government performs impacts

on how well communities and citizens prosper and succeed both now and into the future. “Democracy is both a privilege and a responsibility. By participating in the local government process and casting your vote you help ensure it rests on the right shoulders. Our goal is that, for the first time in nearly two decades, local government will be elected by a majority of New Zealanders.” 

Planning for the future Progessing forward Trained architect, town-planner and timber joiner Christian Simon wants to build a better future for the Kaipara.

Authorised by Pete Hames 397 Central Road RD 1 Paparoa

Mr Simon has enjoyed living in the Kaipara for the past seven years and thinks it is one of the most unique and beautiful places on earth, however, he believes there are some issues which he would like to resolve. “I don’t like the farms in Kaipara to be sold to multinational investment companies that have no long-term interest in a healthy environment or outmoded infrastructure projects that claim to protect the environment but create unbearable debt and block more modern and appropriate development by imposing mandatory obligations,” he said. “I don’t like the best places in the district to be sold to the super rich so that we have to fight to reclaim access to our waterfront or our villages converted to just another uniform Auckland suburb, where the associated infrastructure later creates even more unbearable debt because it is not covered by the development contribution fee. “We need to elect candidates with strong backbones that are only responsive to our communities. We have to get up ourselves and stand up for our rights. We need a structural change. “The lesson for all communities from the Mangawhai Wastewater Treatment Plant disaster is that is the last thing we need. Such facilities need to be

discussed locally, 100 per cent userfinanced, owned and operated. “Our communities are capable of finding the most appropriate and affordable solutions to our own problems, because we have to live with the outcomes. Our many voluntary groups are the true foundation of our communities. “Modern telecommunication offers a lot of information for everyone and allows a step forward in democracy. Searching and finding together the best solution for our community will enable politics to be fun. That is what we need.” 

Julie Geange has previously represented the West Coast Central Ward on Council and has once again put her name forward for the role as elected member. She has lived near the Kai Iwi Lakes for more than 20 years and with her husband runs a beef and dairy support unit and small accommodation business. She has three grown children. “I would like to see a progressive district that recognises that farming is the backbone of the economy, but it’s the people that make it a place to call home,” said Ms Geange. “Our communities are all different and we need to recognise this and work with them to get the best outcomes for all. “Our roading network is suffering and we need to do better. Who knows the roads as well as the people who live on them? Let’s talk to them. Let’s find the balance between ensuring debt reduction continues and still being able to drive home safely.” Ms Geange says she is passionate about her community and wants to be a part of shaping the future. “I believe we need to learn from past mistakes; going forward we need good sound governance, clear communication and robust financial reporting. We need to ensure our procurement policy is fit for

He believes it must focus on the future of Kaipara, not the past. “The elected councillors must provide strong governance and clear guidance to the council executive,” he said. “I hope the elections will deliver a strong forward looking council with the ability to consider district-wide issues without being ambushed by conflicts of interest or pet project agendas. I stand for transparency and accountability; consultation, collaboration and communication. “Having spent most of my working life in the corporate world and holding a number of senior executive positions in the pulp and paper and meat industries, I have experience and understanding of governance and its boundaries as well as strong financial literacy skills. “There is no ‘one size fits all’ for the Kaipara district. FULLY QUALIFIED Giants in their field  by Andy Bryenton

Nobody could ever accuse the Case Optum 300 of a machine designed by half measures. Standing impressively tall and fitted out with massive, turf-gripping tyres a man can stand up inside, this heavy duty tractor is the key to intensive pasture management this spring. Winner of the coveted ‘machine of the year’ medal at Europe’s giant Agritechnica expo, Case can be justifiably proud of the advancements they’ve packed into the Optum’s notso-diminutive frame. These range from greater fuel savings and environmental protection through lower emissions, all the way through to the innovation which gives this tractor its name — a powerful, infinitely versatile CVT transmission, similar to that found in some modern automobiles. That means no more gear changes, as well as a useful on-road cruising speed and a variety of options to creep over pasture without disturbing the biota beneath. A tractor this large — and we’re talking a 5.7-metre tall colossus here — should not be so nimble, but the engineers at Case have worked their witchcraft to ensure responsive handling. It’s also worth noting that

driver comfort has been advanced along with the power output of the Optum — a good thing, as with both front and rear power take-offs ready to accept the biggest of implements, this is one machine destined to spend a long time in the field! In the Kaipara the home of the Optum CVT — and the rest of the Case IH range — is Dargaville’s branch of Norwood Machinery. That’s where the most vital component of this agricultural giant lives — the team who are trained, qualified and experienced to service and maintain it. With all that engineering and design packed in under the big red tractor’s hood, it’s a good thing that these specialist mechanics and technicians have received extensive training, not just in keeping Case tractors rolling, but also in repairing and servicing all the machinery which is so important this time of year on the farm. 

Nothing puts a dent in your lifestyle like a breakdown of those conveniences which make modern life so easy. A shorted circuit, a busted solenoid and suddenly you’re that bit closer to colonial times, with no washer, refrigerator or oven. It’s an inconvenience which can send a modern home back to the ‘dark ages’ — potentially ruining much more than just dinner plans. But help is at hand from the local team who have been a big name in whiteware for decades, Dargaville’s own McKay 100% Electrical. Since the power first came on in the

town by the Northern Wairoa River, the name McKay has been associated with the march of progress. Now new team member Ameet has arrived to ensure that homes kitted out with the latest modern conveniences stay ‘plugged in’, offering a comprehensive appliance repair service which covers

Professional choices avoid costly mistakes There’s no substitute for experience. That’s the concept enshrined in law for the past few years, as changes to the way New Zealanders build and renovate come into force. The new law dictates structured guidelines for just who can undertake critical jobs on the building site — or even around the home. To avoid major issues when it’s time to sell, or indeed, to avoid becoming ineligible for insurance cover — it’s utterly vital that every job involving structural repairs and improvements, water, gas, electricity and weathertightness be accomplished by a qualified tradesperson. The problems faced in the past by homeowners who discovered sub-standard work far too late to hold so called ‘cowboys’ to account are supposed to be eliminated by the current rules — but everyone must play their part. Even apprentices in the trades these days carry cards which identify them as real tradies — their mentors and bosses carry even higher credentials, leaving no doubt as to the hard work they have undertaken to get where they are today. You may find that a tradesperson will

bring their apprentice on site to help with your build or renovation and this in itself is a mark of quality, meaning that your job will be covered meticulously by a master who has been judged good enough to teach. In any case, it’s always best to ask to see the qualifications of any tradesperson who you employ to work in your home or business. Those who we talked to in preparing this special feature said that they have been surprised in the past by how few ask to view the relevant credential before allowing a person with power tools into their home! Of course, part of that easygoing attitude in this part of the country is built on the wellknown faces and reputations of our top tradies. But it’s a good habit to get into and one which can ensure better results in the long run. 

Sharing decades of know-how Work isn’t the end of learning — it’s the start of a whole new learning process. That’s why smart bosses keep up with ‘upskilling’ and why those who have been in a particular trade for many years have so many tips, tricks and techniques at their disposal. A local example of hard-earned knowledge at work comes in the form of Dargaville Diesel’s team of mechanics. Between them, Rodney and Brent have accumulated close to a full lifetime of experience under the hoods of everything with wheels. In the case of Rodney — also commodore of the local boating club — many vehicles which float as well. Both would agree that the modern workshop is a long way from the working environments which faced them as they first entered the trade, but as

it is said, ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same’. Some techniques have fallen prey to new auto manufacturing trends and technologies. Some tools have been replaced by more modern options. But the desire of the Kiwi motorist for an honest repair that lasts the distance remains, and of course, knowing the ins and outs of old-school, carburetor fired and classic machines comes in handy when your customer happens to own just such a hot rod. The ethos of developing throughout your working life is nicely illustrated by modern apprenticeships, which begin the process of learning on the job early. Recently, Munns Flooring Xtra celebrated the graduation of their trainee flooring professional Jarod, who has now gained all three qualifications necessary to become a tradesman in his own right.

Part of a grand tradition  by Andy Bryenton

As school leavers weigh up their options and head off into the world of higher learning, many will be considering a future in the trades. The word from those in the industry is that even more keen and intelligent young people are needed to keep our construction, engineering and technical fields full of fresh ideas and vigour. The idea of apprenticeships is an ancient one — in human history it pre-dates most religions, the concept of democracy or even the advent of mathematics. It’s a safe bet, considering certain hieroglyphic depictions of masters and apprentices learning and working together in ancient Egypt, that even the architect of the pyramids had an up-and-coming monument maker in his employ. During the middle ages the great Guilds controlled all trades, and apprenticeships were the only way forward for those not born into title and wealth. One hundred and ten guilds survive today as Livery Companies, including one which trains all the drivers of London’s black taxi cabs. Boys — for at the time, trades work was strictly gender segregated — competed to be selected as apprentice to prominent blacksmiths, woodworkers, armourers, tailors and more, for a dutiful apprentice would one day inherit his master’s business. Modern apprenticeships in New Zealand do not follow the ancient rules

of master and apprentice, but serve to teach both practical and theoretical knowledge in a hands-on fashion. Organisations such as BCITO oversee rigorous training programmes for young people getting their first start in the trades, and, unlike tertiary study, an apprenticeship means getting paid to learn. It’s also a perfect career path option for those who learn better by example and practice rather from the printed word. And with shortages of trained plumbers, electricians, builders and flooring specialists predicted as the working population ages, it’s also a swift path to self-reliance and business ownership. For many years an academic bias and the perception of the practical trades as somehow lesser to clerical-based professions meant that apprenticeships were seen as inferior to a bachelor’s degree. But, with an average of four years study, eight hours a day, five days a week, today’s Kiwi apprentice may very well put in the work of a doctoral student! That guarantees great results for the next generation in the trades. 

 One of the original trades to introduce apprenticeships, smithing was a way out of peasant servitude and forms the basis of modern engineering
